REVIEW: The Sins Of Thy Beloved - Lake Of Sorrow Napalm Records, 1998
9.5/10
The Sins Of Thy Beloved - Lake Of Sorrow - cover art Another great Norwegian band has seen daylight (or perhaps the dark of night). The Sins Of Thy Beloved is a rather new band following in the footsteps of fellow countrymen Theatre Of Tragedy but their music is slightly different. The music of TSOTB is perhaps a little heavier, thicker and faster than Theatre's. This album is filled with a very emotional mix of death and doom metal. Heavy guitars and drums are accompanied by great violin playing by Pete Johansen, who normally plays Irish folk music in his own band. The violin is very important to create an atmosphere that really enhances their songs. Another important part of the band's music is the beautiful piano, which Theatre Of Tragedy unfortunately seem to have left behind them. The vocals are very emotional and consists of dark male growling as well as beautiful soft female soprano. The only thing annoying with their music is that the band deliberately only publish a few lines of the lyrics from each song since they believe you will listen more closely to the music if you don't already have the whole lyrics in front of you. The only problem is that the growling parts are almost impossible to hear... The album was recorded at Sound Suite Studio, produced by the band together with Terje Refsnes. This is one of the best metal albums of the late 90s. If you like Theatre Of Tragedy you will probably also love this one!
