REVIEW: The Soundbyte - River Of Broken Glass Amaranth Recordings, 2004
7.5/10
The Soundbyte - River Of Broken Glass - cover art The Soundbyte is a solo project of Trond Engum who plays guitars in the well-known Norwegian avantgarde metal band The 3rd And The Mortal. Here he doesn't limit himself to one instrument though but also tests his skills with bass, programming, vocals and keyboards. "River Of Broken Glass" is an album that I would like to label as ambient but that usually refers to less organic and dynamic music entirely composed with keyboards and computers. The Soundbyte is different in that aspect but the overall atmosphere and the slow, brooding soundscapes will make the listener associate in that direction I am sure. The main foundation of The Soundbyte is a digital one but on top of this an organic coating has been laid to make it sound more alive, less predictable and perhaps also more accessible to a wider spectrum of fans. More accessible is perhaps the wrong term to use. I should say less inaccessible instead as this is definitely not for everyone. This is the first release from the new label Amaranth Recordings, created by Ephel Duath mastermind Davide Tiso, and we should see a lot of interesting material coming from there in the future.

The 3rd And The Mortal fans will be able to appreciate this solo release as well I think although it is more personal and reflects the ideas and thoughts of Trond Engum instead of an entire band. The atmosphere of the album is quite dark and cold at times but also warm and welcoming once in a while. It is soothing and relaxing music made for contemplation. According to the promo sheet this album was completely recorded on a boat in open North Sea which further adds to the experimental side of Trond Engum and The Soundbyte. He has no intention to follow trends, to please the general crowds or provide hit songs that will be forgotten tomorrow. Instead he has dedicated himself to be true to himself and create music that comes straight from within. "River Of Broken Glass" is the soundtrack to an individual and although not always enjoyable it is definitely an interesting and intrigueing album most of the time. If you enjoy music in the vein of Antimatter and later Anathema this might be for you. Emotional, passionate, experimental and refreshing.
