REVIEW: The Spades - Learnin The Hard Way Surburban Records, 2002
5/10
The Spades - Learnin The Hard Way - cover art Dirty white trash punk rock... Well, these Dutch guys from Eindhoven aren't entirely white but still this is just as boring as it would have been if they would have been caucasians in suites. Vulgar and offensive punk lyrics and the mandatory sleazy hardrock influences aren't exactly what you would want to play for your grandmother but this isn't exactly something that I enjoy that much either. Eventually most punk rockers grow up but until then we have to live with their boring traditional lyrics. The Spades are far from being bad musicians and the music of this album would certainly fit in well at a party where there is lots of alcohol present but unfortunately the raw vocals, the dirty rock sound and the uninspiring monotonous song structures lack the kind of excitement that I need to hear from a band if I am to find them the least bit interesting. By the way, one of the songs start out with the line "this is a song about how you kill your woman and get away with it". Ironically, this is one of the best songs of the album and actually sounds a little (I mean a little!) AC/DC-like. Not bad but not my cup of tea either. Controversial? Well, maybe. Interesting? Not really...
