REVIEW: The Storyteller - Tales Of A Holy Quest Black Lodge Records, 2003
7.5/10
The Storyteller - Tales Of A Holy Quest - cover art The Storyteller is a band from the north of Sweden whose members through the years have been rather anonymous to most people. Nonetheless, these guys have now produced three full-length quality albums since the band's inception in 1995. When there is a concentration difference of a certain ion across a cell membrane or any other semi-permeable barrier a gradient is established which pushes ions more in one direction than the other. The same happens when new metal genres grow in popularity. Musicians and bands will pour into that genre very quickly and that is what has happened with the power metal genre lately. Some bands are good and have their own unique style but most don't. The Storyteller were however part of the early explosion of the scene and in my opinion they stick out as one of the best bands Sweden has to offer. My opinion has not changed with the release of their latest album "Tales Of A Holy Quest". Musically there are no major changes from the past but the band as a whole have become more experienced song writers it seems, something that apparent in particular in the wonderful closing track "Trail Of Blood", a power metal epic that is THE hit song of the album. There are several other very good songs on the album and it becomes clear after a while that the band's vocalist L-G Persson have developed very nicely since the early days of the band. Well written songs, a good vocalist and talented musicians, is there nothing wrong then? Well, yes and no. It is a very good album, that I don't deny, but in some songs they tend to rely a little too much on L-G's vocals while there is not much else of interest going on in the background. If you like neo-classical power metal with nice melodies and powerful vocals you should not go wrong with this album though. They sound a little like a mix between Rhapsody and Candlemass I must say. Stand-out tracks: "Seed Of Lies", "Blinded Eyes" and "Trails Of Blood".
