Starting out as Cirrhosis (ugh!) in 2001, this band did a bunch of stuff since then (according to the press release), the most significant being the acquisition of Tim Yeung (Hate Eternal, Vital Remains, Council of the Fallen, Decrepit Birth, Agiel, and Aurora Borealis) and the next most important being the name change to The Tenth Circle. Damn near anything is an improvement over Cirrhosis, right? I think so and suppose the band did too. Regardless, on Of War and Reflection, The Tenth Circle unfurl a relentless brand of Death Metal steeped in Thrash. Imagine Malevolent Creation, Soilent Green, and Exodus in a head-on collision and you might get close. The drumming is clearly a high mark, but the rest of the supporting cast (the main band members, really) are quite proficient in their tasks, too. The riffs are memorable, which is no small feat within the genre. The mid-ranged vocals are strong without being too over the top, at times sounding like a more one dimensional D. Randall Blythe (Lamb of God). The bass is discernible and serves to thicken the overall sound. Guitar solos are not really played, but rather Morbid Angel styled layering of clean guitar parts atop grinding riffs is present. Although Mr. Yeung has reportedly stepped away from yet another satisfied customer, it should come as no surprise when The Tenth Circle make a bigger splash on the scene. This is quality music from Lancaster, PA that warrants your attention. If you're on the East Coast (U.S.) try and catch the band live as I'm sure they absolutely kill.
