REVIEW: The Third And The Mortal - Memoirs Voices Of Wonder, 2002
7/10
The Third And The Mortal - Memoirs - cover art The Third And The Mortal is without a doubt one of the strangest bands on the planet and they have changed a lot musically since their first releases. Their first two efforts featured the wonderful vocals of the equally beautiful Kari Rueslåtten but since then Ann-Mari Edvardsen has been in charge of the oral pleasures. I can't really decide on whether I like her voice better or not but she is still a very good vocalist to say the least. A lot has happened since the band released their last album five years ago and a lot of fans have feared that the band had finally been put to sleep but this was apparently not the case. There are no traces of doom metal left in their music of today but it is still embraced by a very strong atmosphere. Their music of today is a lot more experimental than it was in the past and electronics have been used to a vast extent to lay a surreal foundation for the spoken words and clean male and female vocals. Sometimes the music reminds of metal, sometimes of jazz and sometimes of surreal electronic music but there is always a nice laid-back atmosphere in every song. This is a relaxing album that still stirs the mind and I am very pleased to see that the band has not come to a standstill in their evolution. This is weird but luckily in a good way. Too bad it doesn't suit my taste very well though... The first half of the album is good but then it sort of fades out.
