REVIEW: The Vision Bleak - Carpathia Prophecy Productions, 2005
7.5/10
The Vision Bleak - Carpathia - cover art My only experience with this band, to tell the truth, had been just one song from a sampler or something similar. By the way, I didn´t like that one... If I´m not wrong it was a track taken from the previous album. Well, it was time to face a full length album from these Germans, and “Carpathia” fell on my hands. Wrapped in a thick, majestic sound, and of course in a horror story, The Vision Bleak bestow us with a huge dose of darkness made music. The aim of reflect chilling atmospheres through their notes is fulfilled; not in vain this band is nowadays the closest to a “horror metal” definition. Always solemn voice, strong guitars remarking the notes without complex gestures, steady drums and keyboards leading the whole symphony, this way the sound is absolutely compact and thick as a brick. The horror feeling is mainly provided by the synths, that alternate long notes the atmospheric kind with melodies woven to enrich the melodic body of the songs. All in all “Carpathia” is a convincing album. One can hardly complaint about anything on the technical aspect of this album, and the eerie ambience is achieved in my opinion. The Vision Bleak is probably one of the best bands in their genre. Their brand of gothic metal is not cheesy –the production of guitars is really stout- and their style has some slight echoes of Type O Negative. I must admit this style is not my cup of tea, but The Vision Bleak are certainly good in their ambit and this album should not be overlooked at all.
