Former Empyrium mastermind Ulf Schwadorf has now finished the debut album for his new band The Vision Bleak where he works together with Tobias Schönemann from the death metal band Asgaia. He has distanced himself from the dark folkloristic black metal of Empyrium and decided to go for a deadlier, and maybe also slightly more straight-forward, horror metal sound with The Vision Bleak. H.P. Lovecraft, Nosferatu, werewolves and Frankenstein is what this is all about. Among shadows, in the bleak light of the moon, in a time when reality was declared by Christianity and scientists were seen as heretics, we are invited to join Schwadorf when he explores the horrors that have haunted human minds for hundreds, maybe even thousands, of years. The album starts off with a bleak piano intro and an operatic female voice before hell breaks loose. The thing that strikes you the most about this recording is the extremely powerful and clear production. The low-key male vocals are obviously going for something in the gothic vein and they are indeed quite successful. The sonorous keyboards work nicely with the heavy arrangements as well but that doesn't really come as a surprise as orchestration has always been one of Schwadorf's skills. Sometimes this sounds a little like Snowy Shaw's own child Notre Dame but this is cleaner and more gothic in general. Prophecy Productions is one of the few labels who dare to sign bands that stick out from the competition and The Vision Bleak is another interesting addition to their roster. Heavy and dark, bleak and scary. The end may be closer than you think. If avantgarde horror metal sounds interesting to you and if you dare enter the world of The Vision Bleak then buy this one.
