REVIEW: Theatre Of Tragedy - Assembly Nuclear Blast, 2002
8/10
Theatre Of Tragedy - Assembly - cover art Theatre Of Tragedy is a band of true ambiguity. This Norwegian band have become equally hated and loved over the years due to their drastic changes of musical direction. Starting out with two close to legendary gothic doom metal releases in the mid 90's they moved into the more electro-romantic field with the beautiful "Aégis" in 1998. Moving even further into the electronic industrial field with their last album "Musique" they continue down the same path with their new album "Assembly". While the earlier albums up to "Aégis" were all very warm and passionate their music is now pretty cold and sterile. What has kept my interest in the band up even with this new release is the beautifully soothing voice of Liv Kristine and the fact that they are still able to write very good music with strong melodies that stick to your mind. The new album is softer than "Musique" was and the vocals from Raymond sound rather foolish by now but there is still something special about Theatre Of Tragedy that makes me like this album as well. It's the worst they have achieved so far but it is still very good music. This is an album made for the masses but there are still a few tracks that stick out from the rest like "Automatic Lover", "Universal Race" and "Let You Down". The rest of the songs are unfortunately a little plain but this is an album that grows on you which I like.
