REVIEW: Theatre Of Tragedy - Velvet Darkness They Fear Massacre Records, 1996
9.5/10
Theatre Of Tragedy - Velvet Darkness They Fear - cover art The second release from the Norwegian band Theatre of Tragedy sounds a little different from their first one. The music is slower and slightly heavier and the whole album seems to be generally darker. The lyrics are also about the three d's - the devil, darkness and death. Musically this album is not as melodic as the previous one - you really start to miss the fine piano play from Lorentz Aspen on a couple of the songs, which is also what I miss the most on their latest release Aégis, where it has been replaced completely by electronical keyboard sounds. It all starts off well with a very nice song called "Fair and 'Guiling Death" that has a great vocal duet between Raymond and Liv. Unfortunately the album sort of looses its charm after a couple song. The soprano vocals by Liv are still nice but the songs are too monotonous and it becomes a little boring at the end. Still, this is a nice recording that is really worth listening to, especially if you like this type of music. The record was recorded at Communication Studio, Germany, and engineered by Gerhard Magin and Pete Coleman. It was also produced, mixed and mastered by these two guys. The band dedicated this album to one of their members, Tommy Lindal, who had recovered from a serious illness.
