REVIEW: Therion - Crowning of Atlantis Nuclear Blast, 1999
9/10
Therion - Crowning of Atlantis - cover art Ten years ago most bands on the metal scene played almost the same type of music. Today there are lots of different styles within metal and Therion is clearly one of the most original bands on the scene today, mixing opera choirs with very melodic metal. Therion has developed in an extraordinary way since their first years of growling death metal. The brain behind the band is the vocalist (although he doesn´t sing on many tracks nowadays) Christofer Johnsson who writes all the classical arrangements as well as playing lead and rhytm guitars and keyboard. He must be considered to be a musical genious but he's not the only one in the band. He is accompanied (on this recording) by five other members as well as 8 other vocalists (among them Sarah Jezebel Deva from Cradle of Filth), 5 choir members and an orchestra consisting of 4 people, playing violin, viola and cello. This is a great mix of classical music and melodic metal that I think would be loved by a lot of people who doesn´t like metal in general. It might not be Therion´s best release ("Theli" probably is) so far but it´s really great music.
