REVIEW: Therion - Deggial Nuclear Blast, 2000
9.5/10
Therion - Deggial - cover art Another great release by the masters of operatic metal - Therion. The man behind this masterpiece is as usual the genius Christofer Johnsson, who has written all music on this album as well as playing guitar and keyboard. He used to do the vocals in this band as long as they were more of a death metal band but on this recording he doesn't even open his mouth. The singing is instead done by a choir consisting of 8 people (2 soprano, 2 alto, 2 tenor and 2 bass singers) and they do a great job. Except for the members of the band they have also hired Hansi Kürsch from Blind Guardian to do the male vocals on "Flesh of the gods", a great song. Jan Kazda plays acoustic guitar on this album as well as helping them out with the classic arrangements. Waldemar Sorychta plays acoustic guitar on "O fortuna", the Therion version of Carl Orff's masterpiece with the same name. Alexander Schimmeroth plays the piano. They have also hired another ten people to play different orchestral instruments, like oboe, violon, cello and flute. This shows a little bit how complex this music really is. It's is a great mix of melodic metal, opera and classical music. Did I mention that Christofer Johnsson is from Sweden :).
