REVIEW: Therion - Lepaca Kliffoth Nuclear Blast, 1995
9/10
Therion - Lepaca Kliffoth - cover art Therion is a remarkable band and one of the most unique metal bands in the world today. They have transformed from being originally a death metal band to the symphonic operatic band they are today. The band members has also changed as quickly as the music with the brain behind the project, Christofer Johnson, being the only original member still in the band. With nine full-length albums behind them Therion is now one of the really big names in metal together with bands like Iron Maiden, Metallica and Megadeth, although there is a huge difference in the music they are playing. This is the first Therion album where Christofer used operatic singers for a few songs. Since this was new to the band the result wasn't as good as it could have been but they certainly made up for it with their next release "Theli", one of the best metal albums ever, where much of the death metal vocals were replaced with opera choirs. Lepaca Kliffoth was the last stop of their era as a death metal band and it is a really great album with very melodic fast metal. There is also a cover version of the Celtic Frost song "Sorrows of the moon". This album has some of the things you could miss from the new Therion of today - aggressivity and speed. It is not nice and clean music like their latest release "Deggial" but it is still prime class music. If you like very melodic metal and don't mind death metal vocals this is definitely something you would not want to miss out on!
