REVIEW: Therion - Secret Of The Runes Nuclear Blast, 2001
10/10
Therion - Secret Of The Runes - cover art There are still some people around who remember Therion as one of the first Swedish death metal bands in the early 90's. Their first albums were very unique death metal albums but it was with the legendary "Theli" release in 1996 that they became widely known to the world for their mixture of classical music, opera choirs and heavy metal. Therion has always been extremely unique and they still are. The new album "Secret Of The Runes" is a natural sequel to last year's release "Deggial" but things are not exactly the same as they were then. "Secret..." is heavier and darker than "Deggial" was and there are perhaps stronger metal influences this time. There are still lots of powerful orchestral arrangements but not as many as before. The vocals this time are some of the strongest ever on any Therion release and I'm not just saying this because the choir is from Sweden. As you probably already know this is a concept album based on Nordic mythology with each of the nine different worlds of the world tree Yggdrasil making out one song on the album. Therion are now stronger than ever with the creative genious Christofer Johnsson being joined by three highly professional musicians. May the story never end.
