REVIEW: Therion - Symphony Masses: Ho Drakon Ho Megas Megarock Records, 1993
10/10
Therion - Symphony Masses: Ho Drakon Ho Megas - cover art Therion have always been pushing the boundaries of modern metal ever since their early demo days. It stood clear even back then that this band would become something special and there is no doubt about the fact that the band would have been just one among a thousand others without the mastermind Christofer Johnsson. I have praised his talents countless times before but he is such an amazing person that I can't help it. This was the final album of pure death metal that Therion made before taking off to develop the symphonic side that we all know of today. Pure death metal I said..., well this is not really pure death metal either since this is one of the most experimental and complex death metal albums ever made. Heavenly brutal vocals, wonderful metal riffs from the 80's and the oriental sounds that became the trademark of old Therion. There isn't that much of the oriental sounds left in the Therion music of today but at this time that was one of the things that made them different from many other bands. If you are not into death metal in general I would still advice you to listen to this album because Therion is and have always been one of a kind.
