With "Lepaca Kliffoth" Therion took their first trembling steps away from the oriental themed death metal of the early releases towards more classical influenced operatic metal. The oriental touch is still there but the music is much more elaborate and advanced and "Theli" would be the real breakthrough album for the band. Mixing traditional heavy metal á la Iron Maiden with powerful opera choirs, majestic orchestral arrangements and oriental nuances band leader and composer Christofer Johnson managed to create an album that sounded like no other album had ever done before. "Theli" was completely unique when it was released back in 1997 and now, six years later, it still is. I would perhaps not go as far as claiming this to the most important release in the history of metal but it is definitely an important album for Therion that helped turning them into what they are today. It is also one of the most ambitious albums of the 90s, the only shame is that they could not afford a real orchestra which would have taken it to even greater heights, perhaps something up for re-recording soon? Christofer still dared using his voice on "Theli" although his voice isn't really perfectly suited for death metal growling nor clean singing. He is also joined by Mr. "be a part of every quality metal project from Sweden" Dan Swanö who handles the clean gothic styled vocals with a decent result. Despite a few minor flaws, "Theli" stands as one of the finer metal releases of the 90s and should definitely find its way to your record collection.
