REVIEW: Thermal Detonators, The - Stereo Sapiens Self-financed, 2004
5/10
Thermal Detonators, The - Stereo Sapiens - cover art Sweden's The Thermal Detonators seem to partly label themselves a metal band, but are essentially a groove-oriented rock 'n' roll band with some punk influences. Their latest EP, Stereo Sapiens, features five tracks, three new tracks and two from older releases. The sound is raw and in-your-face and reminds me of what Clutch might sound like if they were transformed into a group of beer-guzzling frat boys looking to start fights and bang fat chicks, and weren't that good.

"Knock You Out" starts off the EP and you can tell this is most likely a crowd favorite as it would come off well in a live environment with the sing-along ending of "Come on! Come on! I'ma knock you out!" This is a pretty good tune.

"Wicked" follows and slows things down a bit with a 70's style riff and a more subdued vocal approach, the chorus us punctuated by a Misfits-like "Oooooh-Oh!" There is a nice little lead break in the middle that leads to some bass noodling before it kicks back in with some more punk-like chants of "Hey!" Then it's chorus time again ending an OK song, that's kind of boring.

The next song is "Rattlesnake's Revenge," part two of the band's Rattlesnake Trilogy. This song doesn't really improve on anything. I'm not sure what this trilogy is all about but apparently we must understand that this guy is a "redneck" and a "rattlesnake" of something I can't quite understand. Do they have rednecks in Sweden?

Then we have the bonus tracks, the first being "Chicks" with the extremely thought-provoking lyrics of "I like chicks." Well, so do I, but I don't have to sing about it in a crappy song! Yes, this song is crap. Then we have part one of the Rattlesnake Trilogy, "Rattlesnake Blues," where we find out that even back in the day this guy was a "redneck" and a "rattlesnake." Well, at least he hasn't changed and is keepin' it real! Go redneck, go! I can only assume what part three will bring. Maybe we'll learn more about how this redneck became a rattlesnake, or vice versa. I can hardly wait. Honestly.

All in all this EP isn't horrible, but it isn't really anything special, either. This band would definitely be a lot better in a live environment where everyone was drinking a lot of cheap beer and could jump around — or line dance — like retarded, drunken rednecks. Yeehaw. Or as the Swedish Chef might say, "Yeehev!"
