REVIEW: This Empty Flow - The Album Eibon Records, 2006
9/10
This Empty Flow - The Album - cover art “Magenta Skycode”. For a long time I´ve delved many shelves and stores, looking for that marvelous album endowed with rave reviews here and there, without positive results. Now Eibon Records have decided to re-release it, finally I´ve got the chance to listen to this piece of melancholic music. Odd is the fact This Empty Flow feature members from mythical primeval funeral doom purveyors Thergothon. Maybe you know their “Stream From The Heavens” album. Don´t you? Yes, I mean, that piece of crushing doom metal with horrible sound regarded by many as “cult” and blah blah blah... Well, after releasing ultra doom metal the band took another direction far away from distorted down-tuned guitars and embraced gothic ressonances in the mellow guitars and dour vocals, therefore starting another venture called This Empty Flow. Pop, gothic music, Pink Floyd and even some Radiohead can be thought of when hearing their material. “The Album” is a double CD edition featuring the “Magenta Skycode” album on the first disc and a bunch of rarities on the second one.

The album itself was recorded in 1995 and it´s the real force behind this re-release. You can perceive the pure sound of emptiness and ellegant despondency carved in the notes. Guitars have a well-measured distortion in the most bombastic parts and are soft and hazy in the slower ones. Vocals are clear everytime, as you probably figured out. Listening to this album one can speculate about the possible influences of bands like Anathema in their “sudden” evolution. For this album reminds a lot the style of Cavanagh and co.; since “Magenta Skycode” was released prior to “Alternative Four” and “Judgement”, it´s up to the listener to believe or not that influence. The rarities CD features material recorded between 1994 and 1996. It mostly includes songs in the vein of goth acts as The Cure with sparse influences from Christian Death, And Also The Trees, Clan Of Xymox and other gothic pop bands. It´s curious and weird; there are good moments but this release is mainly a complement for maniacs and collectors; a good partenaire of the album. This is possibly the last chance to savour a highly interesting, underground, brave band.
