REVIEW: Thornesbreed - The Splendour Of The Repellent Animate Records, 2003
8/10
Thornesbreed - The Splendour Of The Repellent - cover art When I downloaded a promo song for this album it blew my mind out. I was so impatient to get hold of this CD. And as it usually happens it didn’t live up to the expectations. I don’t know if the expectations were too high or what ‘cause this is good material, but the empty feeling remains. All seven songs are very intense Death Metal, mostly blasting throughout the album. Sometimes drums sound like a 12 mm heavy machine gun, similar to the opening track of Malevolent Creation’s ‘In Cold Blood’ and that’s fucking awesome!! I don’t know how someone who listens to i.e. Nightwish, and not this, can call himself a fan of brutal music? Then, the guitars are here just to increase the level of brutality with their technical assault that continues throughout the whole 33 minutes of music. It really adds an extra spice and is reason more to bang your head against the wall with full force while listening to ‘The Splendour…’! I, of course, have some complaints, but they are few. First of all, it is obvious that Thornesbreed don’t have a bassist in the regular line-up, but have used a session one for the recording. Bass lines are weak in the recording and that’s the greatest minus that I have found. All other sounds and production or playing are great but, bass is missing. Sometimes there is a small cut in brutality and speed 'cause the riff is not so good, or 'cause the solo is not the most appealing, but that is just a few times. The thing I feel a must to mention is the cover picture. It’s a devil fucking some lust insane cunt and it looks so good especially since only black and blue colors are used on white paper. It looks as good as an average porn pic I collected for my archive, just a bit sick/blasphemous too! Also, this is a multimedia release, featuring a video clip from bands live appearance and some other sick memorabilia. All in all, this is a great release, which you should get and I believe the band will improve a bit on their next record.
