Since their debut album "The Scarlet Tapestry" in 1997 the
American doom metallers of Thorns Of The Carrion have matured a bit as it
comes to song writing. The songs are now more complex and shows more
versatility than they did last time. With such diverse influences as Bathory,
Paradise Lost, Dead Can Dance and Johnny Cash this might not come as a
surprise but it takes a while before everything falls into place in the band
and I think Thorns Of The Carrion has reached that point by now. The music is
still as dark, passionate and doomy as ever before but they have improved on
the vocals (both clean and growling) and the ethereal keyboard melodies are
now very well fitted into the music with an appealing result. As you may
suspect this band has lots of gothic inspiration flowing in their veins but
this shows mainly in the lyrics although the traces are by no means completely
absent in the music either. Thorns Of The Carrion may not beat the masters of
doom yet but if you like this kind of emotional yet tenderly aggressive metal
it might be worth checking this new album out. One thing is for sure: this is
not a band that waste their time since they have already started working on
their next epic doom metal album called "The Shadow Masque". I am already
curiously looking forward to that one. I think they could benefit from
experimenting with different kinds of vocals to create effective contrasts
together with the growling vocals. I think the female member Leslie Thomas
should also be given more space.
