REVIEW: Thorns Of The Carrion - The Scarlet Tapestry Self-financed, 1997
7/10
Thorns Of The Carrion - The Scarlet Tapestry - cover art The American band Thorns Of The Carrion started out in 1993 and after two demos they decided to record this debut album which was released in June 1997. The band is part of the American doom metal scene which has come to grow rather big during the second half of the 1990's. Deep and dark growling, clean wailing vocals and dark symphonic passages is what lays the foundation for their music. The beautiful keyboards and flutes from the band's only female member Leslie Anderson is a very important part of their music and without these elements they would not be much more than an average doom metal band but much thanks to her Thorns Of The Carrion manage to create some interesting songs. Emotions such as sorrow, sadness, passion and darkness dominate the lyrics which is not really unusual for a doom metal band. So is having very long songs and this is something Thorns Of The Carrion has managed to do very well, one of the tracks even being 18+ minutes long. The band has done well with their first release and these nine symphonies of dirge should most likely appeal to most true fans of doom metal.
