REVIEW: Threat Signal - Under Reprisal Nuclear Blast, 2006
6/10
Threat Signal - Under Reprisal - cover art Debutants deserve a brief introduction I presume so I might as well give you a quick summary of the history of Threat Signal. They started out in the industrial areas of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, a few years back and were successful in promoting their music on the internet, a cheap and efficient marketing tool these days. Eventually they attracted label attention and found themselves hitting the jackpot when Nuclear Blast accepted them into their large community. "Under Reprisal", the band's debut album, was recorded with no other than Christian Olde Wolbers of Fear Factory. Not surprisingly industrial influences can be heard all over this album whose musical roots branch out into several different genres but if you were to put one single genre label on this album it would be melodic death metal. The transatlantic kids have done their homework well and, not ignoring the current metal trends as they so eagerly wish to (like everyone else, no single musicians wants to admit that they are not unique), they have thrown in healthy doses of thrash metal, metalcore and some clean emo vocals. "Under Reprisal" is well produced and flawlessly executed but Threat Signal is a young band and it lacks essence and character.
