The first time I ever saw this band, I was in 8th grade, all about punk rock, and in a real bad venue in Santa Rosa called Jesse Jeans with about 6 other people in the lethargic crowd. Despite my as-of-yet evolved musical taste (I was somehow under the impression that the Exploited were good) at the time, I thought they really rocked it out, so I bought a t-shirt. Fast-forward about 4 years and a heavy dose of life musical progression later, and suddenly I’m hearing all the kids talking about 3 Inches of Blood. This information led to the subsequent purchasing of Advance and Vanquish, along with tickets to see this unique Canadian Metal apparatus once again. It was exhilarating to come back to the same band 4 years later as a full-fledged tour monster, and immensely gratifying to see a great band that struggled for so many years come to fruition, as the show was awesome, brutal, and totally sold-out. Advance and Vanquish is the definitive first step of what’s sure to become a long trail, strewn with bones, blood, swords, decapitated metal fans, and dragon testicles. Every song is a total classic, with Cam Pipes and Jamie Hooper alternating the 80’s high-pitched croon with Schuldiner-style screams, and tight musicianship all around. Plus, who doesn’t like metal about pirates? The Upon the Boiling Sea Trilogy are personal favorite tracks from the album, along with the sci-fi mayhem of Wykydtron. Now get out of my face and buy this album, or you face the possibility of being worthless. Go, you Deadly Sinners, go!
