Without any doubt I have to say that Thunderstone is one of the most promising power metal bands that came out of the masses of new Finnish bands recently. Their self-titled debut album released in 2002 received lots of positive response and afterwards they convinced with their live performance while touring through Europe, together with Stratovarius and Symphony X in 2003. Often called a Stratovarius-clone earlier, these five guys finally showed that there is no reason anymore to compare them with any other band. "The Burning" is much more mature than their debut, shows a great variety of songs - the year couldn't start better. Simply everything has improved here. In the first place of course the vocals of Pasi Rantanen which became much stronger - amazing! However, that's not everything Thunderstone has to offer - strong melodic guitar parts, keyboards that are softly put into the background and great drumming. The opener "Until We Touch The Burning Sun" is the most bombastic track on this album and starts right away with great keyboard melodies and strong guitar riffs. Especially the guitar solo played by Nino Laurenne, but also the chorus with Pasi's great work stays in mind for a long time. Even though there are some faster songs like "Break The Emotions", "Side By Side" or "Evil Within" which all have catchy choruses, you can also find mid-tempo songs to sing along like "Mirror Never Lies". I couldn't tell any weak point on this album, it is simply what I expected to get from Thunderstone; a strong album full of fantastic songs. They should have no problems in the future to compete with other big names in the power metal scene like Stratovarius or Sonata Arctica. If you intend to buy this album, look for the digi-pak version including six (!) bonus tracks.
