Thy Disease gets top marks for production quality and originality with this release as I have not heard of many industrial death metal bands. The entirety of Rat Age is riddled with industrial synthesizer passages which despite not being a fan of industrial or electronica music I found myself enjoying. Towards the end of the album it becomes a crucial element of their sound and something which makes them stand out in the largely stagnant death metal scene. The aforementioned production quality adds to my appreciation of their sound as oftentimes I am a stickler about such things. The rest of their sound is fairly standard for a death metal band; aside from the vocals which I am afraid are dangerously monotonous and substandard growls. The drummer is consistently good throughout Rat Age as well as the guitarists who show significant musical prowess. However, the electronic sound is the dominating element in the music giving it a cold futuristic feel which is, as I mentioned, not altogether bad. The problem with this release is that it only has one defining feature which makes it unique and the rest is fairly average. If they could increase the quality of the rest of the band while keeping the industrial edge which keeps them unique I believe that Thy Disease could potentially produce fantastic music. As for Rat Age I would say that it falls under the classification of good but not great. I would recommend this album to death metal fans with a diverse musical palette.
