REVIEW: Thyrfing - Thyrfing Karmageddon Media, 2004
8/10
Thyrfing - Thyrfing - cover art Thyrfing have grown to become one of the leading bands in the slightly limited genre today known as viking metal. Their self-titled debut album was originally released in 1998 but is now being re-issued by their record label Karmageddon Media (earlier known as Hammerheart Records). Hailing from Sweden the band saw it fit to combine "traditional" black / death metal with folk melodies and some orchestral keyboards to create a nice atmosphere. Brutal vocals, a raw production, groovy guitar riffs and beautiful symphonic interludes are combined in a very tasteful manner and it is actually hard to believe that it is the band's first official release. It is one of the most powerful albums that this genre has seen even to this date. What has always been the most impressive feature shown by Thyrfing is the keyboard melodies which enhances the music a great deal. That was the most important reason why I really loved their "Urkraft" album where they really let that element stick out above the rest. Here it is not quite as prevailing but it is still a very nice album. I don't think Thyrfing should have recorded this album in the Sunlight Studio but that was a choice that they probably saw as right back then. It is also nice to see a few Swedish song titles here. The Thyrfing catalogue has sold close to 35,000 copies and I am sure the demand for their albums will only increase in the future. The music is slightly repetitive but it marked a very promising start in the band's impressive career. An album that connects ancient history with the modern present. It is hard to find any favorite songs here as it is a very even album but "Vargavinter" and "Going Berserk" are both excellent songs.
