REVIEW: Tidfall - Instinct Gate Nuclear Blast, 2001
7.5/10
Tidfall - Instinct Gate - cover art The Norwegian black metal band Tidfall was formed as early as 1993 but it wasn't until last year that they released their first album "Circular Supremacy". Some of you probably think something like "just another Norwegian black metal band that sounds the same as everyone else". This album does have similarities to several other Norwegian acts - the melodies sometimes sound a little like the last Old Man's Child album and there is also a Dimmu Borgir feeling hanging over the album thanks to the great synth works from Aftaneldr. The vocals are however more death metal sounding and quite good. Even though there is nothing ground-breaking or completely unique about the music of Tidfall their music is wonderfully intense, violent, furious and above all creative and well-performed. Now that several of the bands from the black metal explosion in the late 90's are beginning to retire or change style we need to see some new bright stars rising and Tidfall might very well be one of them. Tidfall brings out the best of Norwegian black metal and they do it real well.
