I had heard so much about Time Requiem’s third album “Optical Illusion” before I even received it. A lot of good comments, yet I had not listened to it myself. But before I start with the music, let me first state that the album cover is brilliant...
From the first note of ‘Sin to Sin’ I have not had a single doubt about those comments. Progressive, neo-classical metal of the best quality, with a very intense, but clear sound. As good as the first song’s prelude, it’s end functions as a prelude for the next song. The music is very well composed, and the vocals are just amazing. As one song blends into the other, the complexity of this album is emphasised; a very neat balance between highly melodic parts, and heavy pounding of the instruments.
The titlesong is definitely one of the best songs on this album. Its cinematic-like intro leading intro the first verse, which sets the tone for the rest of the song. The obvious choice for album title, yet every song is brilliant on its own. Another favourite song of mine is “The Ashen Soul”, which’ chorus is so catchy, that it remains in your head for the next few days.
The song “Ocean Wings” adds even more variety to this CD, with it’s ballad-like intro, and its epic atmosphere.
Not surprisingly, Time Requiem’s new album is quite different from the previous one. Time Requiem went to a line-up changes so big, only the man behind the keys (Richard Andersson) stayed behind. However, none of the new band-members degrade Time Requiem’s music..
All in all “Optical Illusion” is nothing less than what I could have expected from Time Requiem, it’s way better. An album that’s going to find its way back into my CD player a lot of times.
