REVIEW: Todtgelichter - Was Bleibt... Folter Records, 2005
4/10
Todtgelichter - Was Bleibt... - cover art An undecipherable logo snatches our glance from the cover art. Really hard to read it properly... well, to hell with this. Todtgelichter play black metal and they hail from Germany, and after several listens I haven´t been shocked by their music, certainly. There isn´t a single trace of originality in this album, everything has been done before over 1000000 times. I´ve given them the chance and bestowed the benefit of the doubt, though subsequent tries of the album yielded no positive results. Nevermind if you take the shrieky Donald Duck-esque voice, the “passages-reflecting-despair-where-laments-can-be-heard”, or any of the very songs included in this album; the deja-vu feeling is quite hard to avoid. Understand me, “Was Bleibt...” is not disgusting, nor horrible. It´s simply uninteresting. Easy melodies, ultra typical black metal patterns and a myriad of cliches, in a nutshell. Nothing more, nothing less. Some accoustic guitars, some other non-metal elements usually put on the music, and fierce black metal alternating mid tempos and fast parts. The sound is correct and the instrumental execution of the songs is also good enough, so no complaints about this side of the band. Maybe the next releases will strengthen their style a bit, since Todtgelichter appears to be a band clearly in progress. Probably bands like these should work more the musical personality and their songs before releasing anything really serious. This way, the scene is overpopulated with albums and bands that pass away in a while, with just a temporary presence in the listener´s mind, condemned to wander the Earth without achieving their goals. Anyway, it´s just my opinion...
