REVIEW: Torman Maxt - The Problem Of Pain: Part I Mars Hill Records, 2007
6.5/10
Torman Maxt - The Problem Of Pain: Part I - cover art Before this landed in my mailbox, I had a passing familiarity with Torman Maxt in name only, that being from a metal review site I frequent. I was anxious to check them out. My immediate impression as the first track "Overture" began was one of dread, a synth riff, "uh oh... this is prog!!" Not a favorite genre of mine but I hung in there like the trooper I can be. It got a little better. The musicianship is quite accomplished and tight, not overly intricate but just enough to stumble into near awe inspiring areas now and again.

The Problem Of Pain: Part I is essentially a prog rock concept album centering around the story of Job, and as any prog rock album worth its salt, it is peppered with instrumentals and little reprises of the same snippets of music a la Pink Floyd. The problem I had was that nothing really stuck out. I played this thing nearly a dozen times and nothing really struck me aside from the guitar work which is killer. "Satan's First Song," "The Angel's First Song," "Satan's Second Song" -- I never could remember what was the one I liked a little. It all struck me as somewhat ...incomplete. There is something missing and I can't say exactly what that missing piece is. It could just be that I am so unversed in the genre that I don't get its earmarkings and be that the case I apologize to the Brothers Massaro. (This band is a trio of brothers from Florida).

Let me just say if you like progressive tinged rock/metal then give them a try and you may actually like it. Simple as that.
