Are you ready for a Tormentation?? This is the initial question asked by German thrash veterans Torment on their latest release properly entitled Tormentation. This is a band that has been on the scene for awhile (founded in 1984) and this latest release celebrates their 20th anniversary. Torment’s sound is in that old school vein of thrash metal, in fact their music is quite comparable to many bands from the old crossover scene from the 80’s combining thrash metal with punk. While a Motorhead influence is very apparent (and at times overwhelming), you also get some metalized Slayer riffs that create a nice formula for some solid headbanging.
Speaking of headbanging, with 17 songs and over 60 minutes of music on this disc, there are ample opportunities. Nearly every song comes in at a torrid pace, leaving the listener with little time to catch his breath. Porno, partying, and torment (as you would expect) appear to be the topics of choice for the band. Needless to say Torment is a group that likes to have a little fun with their music. The major criticism has to be regarding the variety or the lack thereof. After listening to the first couple of songs, I was really amped up but after awhile I began to sense some monotony and I think it was around track 9 that all these songs started sounding the same. Nonetheless, the overall vibe I picked up from this disc is that Torment is an entertaining bunch who not only know how to have a good time but want their listeners to have a good time too. This is quality party music and seems to be the perfect type of disc to put on while you throwing back a few beers or just feel like some general headbanging amongst friends. This disc also comes with a video for the song “Porn Casting” and some band photos. For fans of the band, there is also a bonus disc available. Congrats to the guys for 20 years of Torment!
