REVIEW: Totenmond - TonbergUrtod Massacre Records, 2005
6.5/10
Totenmond - TonbergUrtod - cover art To start this review I must say that one thing makes this album a whole (emphasis on whole) lot better than it would be otherwise. This one all pervasive element to the music is the fact that all of the lyrics are in German, as we all know German is very harsh and the inclusion of this language adds a level of anger and over all ferocity that could not otherwise be attained with this type of music. What type of music is that you ask? Well if I was to describe that particulars of the music by genre I would say it is immensely Thrashy Hardcore/Punk. Now the cd starts off pretty damn fast with Wurmerbarmend and continues the pace fairly well with Heroin, however when Angstbeisser started up I thought “What the hell is this?”. Angstbeisser plods along for 5:15 and after listening to it I have one piece of advice for Totenmond, stick with the fast stuff. I know that bands nowadays want to show how multi talented and expressive they can be, and perhaps I am losing something in the lyrical context (not knowing German and all) but frankly I found Angstbeisser and the other slow songs on the album (Deine Leiche in particular) boring as all hell.

Now to the instrumentals, the vocalist has a low yell/growl that is maintained throughout the album and as I mentioned above the German vocals add a definite unique quality to this release that is (by me at least) extremely appreciated; the vocalist is the guitarist as well and really thrashes along pretty well with the music. I am afraid to say that the bassist is (as is almost always the case in this vein of music) somewhat absent in the production (which by the way compliments the music quite well), and the drummer can hold his own with whatever the tempo is at the time. Overall I would say this release has it’s ups and downs and even though they released their first album back in 1996 I still hear room for improvement; however there is definite potential and I will look forward to hearing what they do with future releases.
