Trail Of Tears is
one of the most interesting of the "beauty and the beast" bands that have
formed in the 90's and I have been a big fan of the band ever since they
released their debut album in 1998. Four years later they are back with their
third album which marks the beginning of a new period in the history of the
band. Their female vocalist Helena Iren Michaelsen has been replaced with
Cathrine Paulsen which made me a little worried about the band's future.
Helena had a very powerful and deep operatic voice that could not be replaced
easily. It seems as if I was right about that because even if Cathrine has a
very beautiful voice herself the band has lost a very important and unique
element in their music. No need to worry though because Trail Of Tears is not
about one person alone. Another thing that made Trail Of Tears stand out from
the rest was the characteristic keyboard melodies from Frank Roald Hagen. They
are still there on this album but they have been pushed back a little into the
background. To make up for the loss of Helena they have also added some clean
male vocals to give the music a stronger gothic touch. The biggest difference
is however that the music is blacker than before and it seems as if they have
been inspired by Dimmu Borgir. In short I would say that the music is less
melodic and more bombastic and intense than on the last album. They have moved
one step closer to the Tristania sound but they are still one step behind. If
you are into this kind of music this is a review you don't really need to
read. A perfect production courtesy of Terje Refsnes does not make it any
worse. The cover of Faith No More's "Caffeine" was a little unexpected but
I guess some will like it... Stand-out tracks: "Obedience In The Absence Of
Logic", "Splendid Coma Visions".
