REVIEW: Trails Of Anguish - Relentless Abhorrence Of Miserys Grievance (EP) Grind It! Records, 2002
7.5/10
Trails Of Anguish - Relentless Abhorrence Of Miserys Grievance (EP) - cover art Is this the same Scythrawl on drums that plays in fellow Quebec black metal band Unquintessence? I think so, as my 2-Cd experience with the guy has made me somewhat familiar with his distinct style and rank him among my current favorite skin-bashers. Trails of Anguish is actually a 2-piece band, with the mighty Scythrawl on drums and vocals and Dischord on all stringed instruments, so I'll assume that they will remain a studio project. Really, it's 6 tracks of the highly extreme black metal which we're seeing a lot of today, and the drumming dominates them all. While Dischord will plow along with constant tortured riffs, Scythrawl will hyperblast for a few bars, slow it down, then come out of nowhere with a percussive eruption that reminds me of Richard Christy's work with Florida band Burning Inside. "Laments of Martyrized Innocence" has a lot of choked stops, but somehow the song doesn't seem all that disjointed. The lyrics which Scythrawl lays out are pretty interesting as well, staying well away from posturing Satanic slogans or ridiculous demonic invocations. The multi-talented artist belts out more of an introspective and misanthropic verbal tirade, and you really get the feeling that he means what he says during moments in "The Scythe of Engrieved Melancholia". There is definitely an impressive black metal movement coming out of Quebec, as if their dominance in the death and thrash metal realms wasn't enough.
