REVIEW: Travers & Appice - Live At The House Of Blues Escapi Music, 2005
7/10
Travers & Appice - Live At The House Of Blues - cover art It may seem strange to release a live album after having only released one studio album before but in this case it makes more sense than it would have done otherwise. The gifted Canadian solo artist Pat Travers teamed up with veteran drummer Carmine Appice in 2004 to record an album together and they have also toured together since then together with the Vanilla Fudge and Steve Vai credited bass wizard T.M. Stevens. "Live At The House Of Blues" was recorded in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, in September 2004 and is now being released on CD by Sweden's Escapi Music. It is gritty and bluesy classic hard rock straight out of the 70s, the kind of music these guys grew up playing. Back in those days their sound was fresh and exciting and even though the times are changing, the concept of this combined Travers & Appice project is a winning recipe today as well. As everyone will come to learn eventually, good music doesn't surrender to the forces of aging. There is nothing remotely pioneering to be found on this disc but that was never the intention, it's just a good old-fashioned rock album made by and for people who love the music.

One half of "Live At The House Of Blues" is songs that can be found on the Travers & Appice studio album while the rest of the songs are from Pat Travers' solo releases and various recordings that Carmine Appice has been involved with before in one way or another. As some of you may know he co-wrote the Rod Stewart megahit "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" which can also be found here. A good and solid album from some incredibly talented musicians but I still don't see the real value of it. I would have preferred another studio album myself. Now that there are plenty of DVDs around only the most hardcore fans will want to invest in a simple live album. Mostly of interest to completeists but a whole lot of music (78 ½ minutes of it to be precise).
