REVIEW: Tristania - Widows Weeds Napalm Records, 1998
9.5/10
Tristania - Widows Weeds - cover art There are several good Norwegian bands on the metal scene today and this is one of them. Tristania sounds a little bit like Theatre of Tragedy and The Sins Of Thy Beloved, both also from Norway, and they have probably been inspired by them. Theatre of Tragedy has developed and changed their music really fast over the years but Tristania sounds very similar on both of their albums. Tristania doesn´t quite reach up to the high quality of their two Norwegian fellow bands on this release, mostly because of the sound quality, but their music is still very good. The music is mostly based on heavy bass melodies but there are also some soft piano music but no really great melodies. The vocals are growling by Morten Veland, who writes most of the music, and great female "angelic" opera-like vocals by Vibeke Stene. They have also hired Pete Johansen, who also plays for The Sins Of Thy Beloved, to play violin and Östen Bergöy to do clean male vocals on the song Angellore. This album is not as good as their second one but it is still one of the best metal albums from Scandinavia during the 90s.
