REVIEW: Trooper - Trooper HMM, 2002
7/10
Trooper - Trooper - cover art Trooper is, at the present time, the most famous and respected heavy metal band of Romania. When I listened to their album for the first time, I was expecting quite a lot. I can tell you, that I wasn't disappointed. I've heard them play live quite a few times, and by now was anxious to hear what they can do in the studio. I've heard a couple of their songs back, when they recorded their demo and filmed their first video, but when I saw their new video, "Tari Ca Muntii" on MTV I said that I just have to get the album. The lyrics are all in Romanian and not very brilliant, but not at all bad either. Music-wise the Trooper sound is very clean, well orchestrated, and well inspired. They might not be the most original band, but all the ideas implemented from other artists are sounding great under the Trooper seal. The recording is a bit raw, but very clean sounding (must have been recorded in a good studio). They're not inovating the music, but creating something worth listening to nevertheless. Dynamics is something that is NOT missing from this band's music. Their musical ideas fit well into the compositions, but sometimes I feel like they've been ripped out of some tunes we've already heard somewhere before. The one thing I like more than anything, is that all the musicians are working so well together that you can't even tell where one instrument ends and where the other one begins. One fine example of this good cooperation is the ballad "Pentru Tot Ce A Fost" (For All That Was). Highlights of the recording are the songs "Ultima Noapte A Condamnatului" (Last Night Of The Condemned), "Tari Ca Muntii" (Strong As The Mountains) and "Dorinta" (The Desire). There aren't any weak songs on the record, the entire thing is a flawless mixture of old-school metal influences. Its only problem (ok ok, so it's not exactly a problem, it's just something that I like to see in bands) is that, besides the fact that the vocalist has a pretty unusual voice (when not reaching for those high notes), it doesn't offer anything original. But no problem, cause they rock anyway.
