REVIEW: Truckfighters - Gravity X Meteor City Records, 2006
7/10
Truckfighters - Gravity X - cover art Without listening to the album I will start this review by consulting the press release accompanying the CD: "67 minutes of pure Swedish fuzz-rock!" *Press play* Why, yes, that is certainly what we've got with the Truckfighters' debut, Gravity X. What they lack in originality they make up for in dedication to the craft. That the craft is a brand of Stoner Rock full of feedback, groove, and certainly noise is not an unwelcome find, though the band's origin in Sweden may be a bit of a surprise. Less Garage Rock than the Hellacopters and more similar to Kyuss, Fu Manchu, and Los Natas, the Truckfighters would be best experienced under the influence of your favorite indulgence. The brass section from labelmates Square appear on "Subfloor" and offer an interesting twist since Desert Rock doesn't normally include trumpets and trombones. Otherwise some spy movie guitar sounds and lots of other guitar pedal effects fill the album. Y'know, more than just distortion. We're talkin' at least some flanger and delay effects. That Anders Jakobson (of Nasum fame) plays drum on "A. Zapruder" is a bit of a surprise since there was no call for a blastbeat, but so it is. Not an essential release but nonetheless fun, Gravity X is an enjoyable mess of a record, but that's the point.
