REVIEW: True Werwolf, the - Vampyr Strigoi & Rituals Dark Adversary Records, 2007
1/10
True Werwolf, the - Vampyr Strigoi & Rituals - cover art What in the name of all that is unholy...? Did we somehow go back in time to when metal was first being birthed, and black metal bands who claim to be "raw" and "kvlt" use five us dollars to buy a cheap tape recorder and record their crappy as hell Satanic worshipping black metal that would even make him laugh? Well, you sure as hell would think that with this very expensive beer coaster.

The True Werwolf, a solo project and project number 13 (how about that one?!) for Graf Werwolf (and let's admit it, there probably have been many more) is probably the most ludicrous release since any demo by the band Goatpenis, though this project we all know is meant to be serious. It's a compilation of both demo CDs that were independently produced by the man himself, and it sounds like it was done on a lo-fi cassette recorder. And the thing you need to bare in mind is that these demos were recorded in 2003, when studios were easier to get into then back in the mid-nineties.

Supposedly, the release is a mix of ambient, black metal, and death metal, but with such a poor as hell recording quality, this release is more like random noises recorded so only dogs can hear. The opening track, Vampyr Strigoi, is just him making noises to cheesy organ music, followed by silence, then him either hitting his mic or putting his guitar on and letting the noise record! That's not ambience, that's a monkey playing with a microphone... though the monkey would probably sound better. And the next track opens with Graf making noises like he's some vampire about to reach climax! If you can make it past these two tracks, then you truly have more patience...

"His Kingdom" starts the second demo and has a much better recording quality, but still incredibly bad given the year it was recorded. It actually has music in it (if you can really call it that) instead of a random drum tap or a heart beat with Graf breathing heavily into the microphone doing god only knows what behind the scenes. However songs still have the sound that lingers, like "Burning Forever" which is just a hard to hear sound effect and a repetitive moan with Graf making noises into the microphone. After listening to this release, even you would understand why someone who spent so much money on such a CD, would sell it to a used CD store for a buck to get rid of it. Even if you find it on-line or have a friend offering a CD-R copy of it, or even if Graf is willing to pay you to listen to it, don't waste your time. It's thirty seven minutes of you're life you'll regret and never have back.
