Seven years of hard work have led to a record contract with Century Media for the Finnish band Turisas and now the world will have the chance to experience their debut album "Battle Metal". The success of the Tolkien movies have no doubt created a commercial demand for all sorts of folk and fantasy metal all over the world and this album is partly a result of that ongoing trend. Turisas will probably be compared to their countrymen Finntroll and Moonsorrow in many reviews but to be honest their music is quite different. In fact, I have heard no other band who sounds like Turisas. Their music is very rich in ideas and variation but they sometimes have difficulties assembling all the pieces into a complete picture. "Battle Metal" is a phrase which has often come to use when discussing the British band Bal-Sagoth and their epic black metal influenced music and Turisas definitely have that symphonic epic feeling in common with these guys. The folk music elements on this album sometimes sound a little like Finntroll and at other times the more playful side of Rhapsody. As you may realize by now it is very difficult to describe the Turisas sound in a few words as there is so much going on here that you sometimes get lost when trying to follow every move of these hard working musicians. Stepping down in the list there are also some influences from classical music to be found here, especially the majestic and powerful intro "Victoriae & Triumphi Dominus" which was definitely one of the highlights of the entire album for me. I'm just sorry that it only lasted for 1 ½ minute. To no surprise the vocals are never the same either. There is everything from semi-whispered clean words to growling and choirs which on occasion adds a minor gothic touch. "Battle Metal" is a wonderfully exciting debut album where the symphonic Bal-Sagoth song structures meet the folk melodies of Finntroll and Rhapsody and we will definitely hear a lot more from this Finnish band in the future. May the pagan warrior in you rise and flourish for the spirit of the past is still alive.
