Twilightning is one of the few modern day power metal bands who have been able to distinguish themselves by not glorifying the past and turning into pale grey copies of have-beens. Following in the footsteps of their countrymen Sonata Arctica they have shown immense maturity in comparison to the youth of the band which was formed as late as 1998. Awaiting a third full-length album, the five-track extended single "Bedlam" is being released. Comparisons to latter day Sonata Arctica are inevitable here because they have both shown a great interest in 80s hard rock but the direct influences that result in audial proof are perhaps stronger when it comes to Twilightning. According to hearsay their previous full-length album was pretty much in the Stratovarius vein but if that's the case they have now moved forward and personalized their sound which is definitely a step in the right direction. Screaming and tasteful guitar solos the 80s way, catchy and traditional power metal choruses, solid vocals and diverse song writing with influences ranging from Megadeth and Helloween to Sentenced and Sonata Arctica will surely appeal to many fans of melodic metal in general. Uplifting and reasonably entertaining but not exceptional nor groundbreaking. A well done pancake is still just a pancake.
