REVIEW: Twisted Autumn Darkness - Darkness Rising Self-financed, 2001
6/10
Twisted Autumn Darkness - Darkness Rising - cover art Twisted Autumn Darkness is a British black metal band that formed in Norfolk in 1999. This self-financed mini album is their first official release and it contains six songs of rather modern sounding black metal with keyboards and many tempo changes but the old school feeling is still very apparent in the background and vocals. Although there is nothing really unique about this release there are two things in particular that I enjoy. First off we have the nice Gregorian chanting that make up the intro track "Darkness Rising". This is a very good beginning and it creates a suitable atmosphere for what is to come. The second thing I like about this band is that they are not afraid of experimenting with some rather unorthodox rhythm patterns and the incorporation of riffs from both death and thrash metal into their musical blend. The keyboards are mostly used very well but sometimes they are a little unnecessary. Fans of Immortal, older Cradle Of Filth and death metal period Therion would probably find this band interesting. They have not really done something entirely unique and they still need to work on the song writing a little but I think I like where they are going. The sound quality is of course not perfect but rather good for a self-financed recording.
