REVIEW: Two Fires - Ignition Frontiers Records, 2002
8.5/10
Two Fires - Ignition - cover art Leader of Two Fires Kevin Chalfant's is one of the most important Melodic Hard Rock vocalists. Back in 1981 he reached # 11 in the Billboard single charts with the song "Megaforce" and the group 707. In 1983 he recorded the album "Heart On The Line" with the pop group Steel Breeze that was released in Europe in 1996! In 1985 he formed VU with former Journey bassist Ross Valory, The Who keyboardist Tim Gorman, Tubes drummer Prairie Prince and Alice Cooper guitarist Stef Burns and Frontiers Records finally released their album in 2000! In 1991, Kevin and Gregg Rolie (former Santana /Journey singer and keyboardist) formed the group The Storm, with bassist Ross Valory (Journey), world-class drummer Steve Smith (Journey, etc., etc.) and guitarist Josh Ramos (CBS group Le Mans). Two of the songs on this fantastic album climbed into the top most requested songs of 1992. They followed that released with "Eye of The Storm", another very good album. Kevin released "Running With The Wind" his first solo album in 1997. He then teamed up with former band mate Josh Ramos, on guitar and created Two Fires. The band's debut album was released in June 2000 and was received really well by the buying public and the press. Now Two Fires are back with the second album, which in my opinion is way better than the way to polite and soft debut. This is melodic rock in the vein of %The Storm (surprise!), Foreigner, Journey, Boston, and Bryan Adams. Maybe one of the reasons for the great progress and improvement is the he songwriting contributions of Jim Peterik (Cinderella, Sammy Hagar, Survivor, 38 Special, etc.) in "Ignition", "More Than a Mystery", "I See Red", "This Night", "The Man I Want To Be" and the ballad "What The Whole World Needs To Know". Musicians on the album include Jeff Jacobs (Foreigner) on keyboards, Rick Powell on bass, Atma Anur (Steve Perry, Vicious Rumors, Tony McAlpine) on drums and Alby Odum on rhythm guitars. Note that there are 10 listed songs in the album, but the unlisted song in the end is probably my favoured one. Interestingly enough the style is totally different and very reminiscent of old Santana (thus really, really cool). The only thing that I think that could have been better is the production. I could have liked a bit more punchy production. Maybe next time then? Good album.invest.
