REVIEW: Twyster - Xplode Massacre Records, 2005
7/10
Twyster - Xplode - cover art Have you ever wondered what Doro would sound like if she were to sing Rhapsody choruses to the riffs of Helloween? Well, now at least I know. Twyster is a German band that was born in 1995 and "Xplode" is their second album thus far. I find myself establishing a love / hate relationship with this band. Their rapid changes and the female vocalist's strong German accent leave me with a somewhat confused look in the face and I try to find a red line in the songs but can't really seem to find one. There are nice ideas, good headbanging riffs, interesting melodies and, above all, lots of energy and power in their music but they fail slightly in one very important aspect - song writing.

Some genres are not really meant for ordinary song writing and who finds himself complaining about a thrash metal album just because there were no memorable choruses? Sometimes a collection of riffs is good enough, at least if they are strong enough to stand on their own. Most of the time that is true in the case of Twyster, but they also show examples of solid song welding techniques. Getting back to the female vocalist once again, she does certainly have a powerful voice made for rock or metal but on occasion she unfortunately makes attempts to reach further than her capacity allows. Most of the time she stays on track though and definitely makes her presence known in every single song and helps lift the music of Twyster to a higher level.

The mandatory ballad "Follow The Storm" has little to say that has not been said hundreds or thousands of times before but other than that "Xplode" is an album that could be highly appreciated by fans of 80s heavy / speed metal who are not afraid of roller coasters.
