REVIEW: Ty Tabor - Safety Ear Candy Records, 2002
5/10
Ty Tabor - Safety - cover art Ty Tabor was one of the founding members of the legendary American progressive rock band King's X back in 1980, a band that has been fortunate to have one of the most stable line-ups in the history of rock music. On the side Ty also runs his own studio and of course a solo project like any other great musician who has hit success. Since one of the albums of King's X was entitled "Ear Candy" I suspect that this album was released either by Ty himself or the band but distributed through Inside Out Music like any other quality progressive release. Although most of the songs on this album are rather mellow rock pieces there are times when we get the chance to hear some nice heavy riffing like on the second track "Better To Be On Hold" which is one of the better songs on the album. Ty Tabor has recorded three quarters of an hour worth of material that is fit for nothing but background playing. The musicianship is almost perfect but the music and the vocals are unfortunately quite boring and uninspiring. Progressive rock and metal can sound great when the right musicians are involved but this is far from being one of the highlights of the flourishing genre. Only buy this if you are a King's X fanatic. Nice and soothing bot not very interesting.
