I´ve always liked Type O Negative, and because of that I must be more critical with every new release that Pete Steele and co. put into the stores. Away from easy praises and odes, a new album should be analysed the objective way, and one is expected to have a serious opinion and get rid of any previous idea. Fans usually tend to review their bands with a huge amount of blindness (there are exceptions, of course), but I´m supposed to be impartial on my comments. Well, the fact is that “Life is killing me” seemed to have everything to make it a classic. Green colour, death and a characteristic layout, everything´s right in the visual side of the presentation. Critics joined the hype, elevating the band. I expected at least a good album. Unfortunately, it wasn´t. “Life is killing me” is a really weak album, very distant from the quality and, especially, the feeling, that the rest of albums own. Naturally, we don´t want to see a “Bloody kisses” copycat, but, hell, I didnt want to hear “this”. When the album is played the first time, something strange is reckoning you, telling it doesn´t work at all, but another chance must be given, and the same happened with the other albums. If “October rust” was a certain commercial raid, and “World coming down” seemed to be the most suicidal album Type O Negative had ever recorded, full of despair and hopeless, this album is really hard to believe. Several listens help to grasp the essence of it, apparently, but I´m sorry, I couldn´t.
After having heard it five or six times, I realized nothing would change: I don´t like this album. It´s not horrible; however, as a whole, it´s clearly inconsistent (still more inconsistent than “October rust”, really). Pseudo-punk happy songs evidently aimed to be catchy are the worst thing in the album. “I don´t wanna be me” is the example. It´s so silly... the same as “I like goils”, or “Angry inch”. Even lyrics aren´t that better, I miss the feeling of the previous albums. It´s like the band has gone back in time, and they have written songs as if they were some years younger, it´s pretty strange. This album is a step backwards. At least some songs are good and correct (e.g. “Anesthesia”). Anyway, the depressive band that I knew isn´t here. Feels like Pete Steele is nowadays happier, and the same goes for his music... I´d dare to say this album could be a renewed version of the punk/gothic/Black Sabbath style showed in the first album, but with a severe absence of substance and inspiration. All in all, boring, inconsistent, average. If you like the rest of albums, beware of it, check it before the buy... if you thought Type O Negative were an ultraboring band, forget about it completely.
