Type O Negative is another subject from the current series of Roadrunner's Best-Of compilations also falling under the category of "The Roots of Roadrunner Records." Having been a fan of this influential band since buying both versions of their 1993 classic, Bloody Kisses -- y'know the one with the chicks almost kissing as well as the one where they actually kiss -- I thought, like so many others, that there was definitely something to this band. Listening to this collection of Roadrunner-era tracks one can hear the progression from underground, misogynistic post-hardcore/thrash/whatever to almost mainstream, misanthropic Goth Rock. A lot of that has to do with the record label and Roadrunner Records went from the purveyors of the underground into a major label player in that same time span, perhaps owing some of that success to Type O Negative. Sounds like the snake biting its own tail, doesn't it? Indeed. Anyhow, this is a fun trip down memory lane showcasing the band's arguable success as well as affording the Deep Purple cover that many of you didn't track down on the Nascar on Fox - Crank It Up compilation, unlike me. Many of the tracks are single or video edits so if you want the original versions track down the albums. How does this compare to the Halloween 2000 The Least Worst of Type O Negative compilation? Good question. This one is chronological and hits the definite highlights, though 8 of the tracks are shared betwixt these two retrospectives. TLWOTON is a more varied affair and features different mixes of "Cinnamon Girl" and "My Girlfriend's Girlfriend," as well as more overall songs, and a few different ones. If you aren't that big of a fan but merely curious about the band, this is the record for you. If you are, you already have all the rest and should pass.
