Tyrant is a band exotic to say the least. Not many Japanese bands get into my CD player, in fact if I count the bands coming from the land of the rising sun I can remember, let´s see... eeeer... I´d quote Sabbat, Sigh, Loudness, Intestine Baalism... Tyrant play black metal and is a bit shocking to see Japanese guys with corpse painting and so on, to be honest. First of all, the artwork and layout is highly professional. Jarno Lahti has been held responsible for that and his work has been excellent. The lyrical portrait of the band has been also a relevant effort. But what about the music? The black metal performed by these guys is quite close to Cradle Of Filth in the overall impression that the album leaves on the listener. We should put the blame on synths (no irony on using “blame”...). The main difference, and something easily noticeable which is the main trademark of this band, is the performance of the lead guitar, playing solos the virtuoso kind with clean notes and fast parts. It takes a bit of time to get used to it, but in the end it´s not bad. The negative note about this album is its excessive length. Too many songs, definitely... in the eight song or something “Grimoires” begins to result pesky and dull. Everything is very professional, though. The sound is clean –too much, maybe- and the patterns of the songs are correct, with some melodies here and there rather interesting, but two or three songs should have been deleted from the pressing of the album to get a more consistent release. Final veredict: correct and enjoyable atmospheric black metal album.
