REVIEW: Tyrant - Legend Displeased Records, 2002
6/10
Tyrant - Legend - cover art Tyrant is a Japanese black metal band who have been rather quiet since they released their debut album "Under The Dark Mystic Sky" in the year 1998 through Pulverised Records. With this second effort they found a new home with the Dutch label Displeased Records who have also been dormant for some time. Quite a few Japanese bands have found their way to Western labels during the last decade such as Sigh, Ritual Carnage, Shadow and Metalucifer to mention a few. Tyrant have been active since December of 1994 and have a female keyboard player who is very important to the band because their music relies heavily on keyboard melodies and arrangements. Their brand of black metal is very epic and majestic, almost like a movie soundtrack with long songs and pompous keyboard arrangements. Due to the fact that they build their music around the keyboards the other instruments are pushed far into the background. Tyrant doesn't do the usual Dimmu Borgir or Cradle stuff though. Instead they use their keyboards as another instrument and not just to support the guitars. There are classically influenced sections but also more bombastic, almost power metal sounding keyboards. With a larger recording budget this Japanese band could go far I believe but unfortunately this album sounds a little thin with monotonous drums and somewhat cheap sounding keyboards at times. They have nonetheless found an interesting concept that they should try to develop further.
