This review could easily have written itself. Either you like U.D.O. or you don't, it's as simple as that. If you have enjoyed the last couple of albums from the German heavy metal icon and former Accept frontman then you will enjoy "Mastercutor". With the exception for the peculiar "Trainride In Russia" off his 2004 album "Thunderball" the last three albums have not offered the listener surprises of any kind. It will always feel comfortable and familiar when you experience another U.D.O. album and this is perhaps also the most important attraction that still draw new fans to this day. As easy as it is to anticipate what a new AC/DC or Motörhead album will sound like, as easy is it to know whether you will fancy a new U.D.O. release or not. He has always been a man of consistency and traditions and nothing has changed for 2007.
"Mastercutor" starts off at a fast pace with the title track which is a classic U.D.O. song with razor sharp riffs, decent solos and a solid vocal performance. One of the strongest pieces of the album alongside the mandatory ballad "One Lone Voice". I usually don't enjoy rock and metal ballads (should I want to listen to quality music of that kind there are much more interesting acts in the mainstream pop business) but U.D.O. have always managed to convince me that there are still a handful people around who knows how to do it right. Old-school heavy metal in a modern package. You know what you get.
